Word Rain: An EdTech Typing Game for Thai Classrooms
Word Rain:
Type the Falling Words, Then Use a Real Board
Can your students type the falling 3- and 4-letter words before they hit the red line? It is a quick warm-up for a projector, laptop or tablet. Then scroll down for what actually works with classroom tech in Thailand.
Now the Real Bit: Classroom Tech That Works
A projector and a decent speaker beat a smartboard that will not switch on. Test the board, the cable and the wifi before the lesson, not in front of 40 kids. Paper word cards still win when the wifi dies, so keep a set in your bag. Why a Typing Game Helps: Short Words, Quick Wins
Short words, a timer and a big screen. That is all it is.
Spotting Letters Fast 🧠
Kids see a word, find its letters and type them before it lands. It turns spelling review into a quick game, and the short words keep it doable for beginners.
Test Your Board First 📺
On the front board, the game becomes a whole-class activity. The on-screen keys only work if your smartboard passes taps through to the web browser, and not every board does. Test it before class, or plug in a wireless keyboard.
3 and 4-Letter Word Pools 🎯
The WORDS button switches between both lists, 3-letter words only, or 4-letter words only. Start young learners on 3-letter words, then move up. Gold power-up words can still drop in any mode.
A Warm-Up, Not a Lesson
Five minutes of Word Rain wakes a class up and gets them reading English letters fast. It is not a phonics course.
Follow it with the real work: say the words out loud, put them in sentences, and write them down.
Optional Google Tools: NotebookLM & Gemini
NotebookLM and Gemini are Google products, not KET software. Some teachers use them to prepare materials. Features, limits and pricing change, so check Google's own pages.
Summaries From Your Own Documents
Google NotebookLM works from documents you upload, such as unit notes or a reading passage, and can make summaries and study guides. At the time of writing it can also make audio overviews you might adapt for listening practice. It is Google's tool, not ours; check what your account offers.
Lesson Brainstorming
Google Gemini is a general AI assistant. Teachers use it to draft reading exercises, phonics word lists or short dialogues. Check everything it writes before it reaches the kids. Gemini belongs to Google, not KET.
Targeted Vocabulary Themes
You can ask an AI assistant for 3- and 4-letter word lists for your current unit (animals, clothes, food) and use them on paper or on the board. Word Rain itself uses a fixed word list; it cannot load your own words.
When the Screen Dies: Twinkl
When the screen goes off, go back to paper. For slides, phonics cards and printable games, see our Twinkl ESL Resources Guide.
Power-Up Words: The Gold Ones
Every word scores 50 points per letter. Gold power-up words also give a bonus, and they can drop in any word mode. Missed words just vanish: there are no lives, only the clock.
AI (Slow-Mo Freeze)
Type AI to slow the falling words for about 6 seconds, so learners have time to find the keys.
COFFEE (Double Score)
Type COFFEE to double your points for the next 8 seconds.
SAWASDEE (Screen Clear)
Type SAWASDEE to clear every word off the screen and get a 500-point bonus.
WIFI (Time Bonus)
Type a gold WIFI to add 5 seconds to the clock. (A plain WIFI from the 4-letter list scores normally but gives no bonus.)
Speed and Ranks: Just for Fun
At the end, the game shows a rough typing speed (correct letters divided by 5, counted as one minute), your accuracy and a rank. The ranks are game labels, not literacy levels.
| Speed Range (WPM) | Student Rank | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 14 WPM | Keyboard Explorer | Still finding the letters. Stick with 3-letter words for now. |
| 15 to 29 WPM | Student Typer | Getting a rhythm with 3- and 4-letter words. |
| 30 to 44 WPM | EdTech Speedster | Quick fingers. Long power-up words like SAWASDEE are within reach. |
| 45+ WPM | Top Rank 🏆 | Fast typing. Nice, but it still does not tell you whether they can read the word aloud. |
