Teaching English in Thailand Requirements

Requirements for Teaching English in Thailand

A clear blue ocean with limestone cliffs in the middle of the ocean.

Thailand is a favoured destination for English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers due to its weather, the cost of living expenses remaining low, and its proximity to four other unique countries within Asia.

If you are contemplating a change of scenery and teaching English in Thailand is on your radar, you will need to guarantee that you can meet the following qualifications:

Necessities for Teaching English in Thailand

  1. A valid passport

  2. At least a bachelor's degree in any field.

  3. Be either a native-English speaker from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the U.K., or The U.S.A, or a qualified, non-native English speaker (you must be fluent in English and speak at a native level with an English Proficiency exam certificate as proof)

  4. A clean criminal background check

  5. (Optional) A TEFL certification

  6. Letters from the school and the Thai Government

  7. Clean Thai Medical Check

English Language Requirements

Native-English speakers from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the U.K., or The U.S.A., are highly favored but not mandated. As a skilled & qualified non-native English speaker, you can also apply for some ESL teaching jobs in Thailand. However, as a non-native English speaker, the Thai Government will request to see a TOIEC English Proficiency Exam Score of 600+ score.

Education Necessities:

To teach English in Thailand, at least a bachelor's degree is required to teach English in Thailand in regular schools, not language schools. The Thai Government accepts bachelor's degrees in any field (i.e., History, Drama, Communication); any four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited university will meet this provision.

Essential Documents

Teachers applying for jobs in Thailand need to have the subsequent original documents available to bring to Thailand:

  1. A valid passport

  2. Bachelor's degree

  3. Passport photos

  4. College/university transcripts

  5. A clean criminal background check

  6. TEFL Certification (Optional)

Conditions Governing Age

In certain countries, particularly in Asia, where it is common to teach English to young learners, schools will generally look for younger teachers (21-40) and abide by certain age restrictions for hiring and qualifying for work visa sponsorship.

However, Thailand is one of many countries in Asia that holds an official retirement age of 55-60. However, some schools in Thailand are willing to hire teachers beyond retirement age.

Physical Necessities

A Thai Medical Check is needed to get a Work Permit in Thailand. This has to happen at a Thai Hospital or a Thai Doctor's Clinic. A fully registered and licensed doctor must sign a form stating that you do not suffer from the subsequent afflictions:

  1. Leprosy

  2. Tuberculosis

  3. Elephantiasis

  4. Drug Addiction

  5. Alcoholism

  6. Syphilis.
