THAILAND'S GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE

Thailand lies in Southeast Asia and offers an ideal gateway into Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Laos. Teachers can travel across Thailand or neighboring countries to experience varying geography. Thailand is famous for its beaches in south and southeast Asia and is home to spectacular Mountains and National Parks in northern Thailand.

The tropical climate has three seasons: hot, monsoon, and cool. The annual monsoon occurs from May to October; however, in the south of Thailand, from October to January, during this same period, there is a colder season in the north where temperatures can drop surprisingly low.

The climate of Thailand means that the school year is different than in other parts of the world. Go to kidsenglishthailand.org/blog/the-thai-school-calendar to read about Thailand's school semester dates.

TEACHING IN THAILAND WITHOUT A BACHELOR'S DEGREE

Teaching in Thailand without a degree is possible. It all depends on the type of teaching job. In Thailand, private language schools where teachers teach English in the evenings, on weekends, and on school holidays do not require a teaching license from The Teachers Council of Thailand (TCT). This means that if the language school owner wants to employ someone without a bachelor's Degree, they can; however, high school graduation is the level of education required by Thai law.

DRESS CODE TIPS FOR TEACHERS IN THAILAND

In Thailand, first impressions count! What you wear is extremely important! The more you dress to impress, the more respect you will garner.

The problem is that in most Thai work environments, the dress code is to be professionally dressed. What most people deem comfortable and professional in most Western countries will feel unsuitable and very uncomfortable in Thailand because, as you are probably aware, Thailand is a scorching hot country! However, most schools have air conditioning.

MALE TEACHERS DRESS CODE

For male teachers in Thailand, you will be expected to wear dress-style trousers/pants and a long-sleeved dress-style shirt. Very few schools allow short-sleeved shirts, and some schools will also expect males to wear a necktie.

A necktie isn't compulsory like other garments, so you can personally ask your school and keep your fingers crossed as you await the answer! As for shoes, males must wear dress-style shoes; no sandals or open-toe shoes are allowed.

FEMALE TEACHERS DRESS CODE

The dress code is considered even stricter for female teachers in Thailand than for males. You will be expected to wear a dress-style skirt, which is at least knee-length. Trousers/pants are not allowed to be worn by women in almost all work environments in Thailand.

Females will also be expected to wear a dress-style blouse/shirt. These can be short-sleeved; however, not too short! Be cautious of how much skin you are showing! Shoes for female teachers must be closed-toe shoes, usually formal dress-style shoes.

It is rare to wear a dress-style suit jacket; nonetheless, you may be asked to wear one on special occasions, i.e., parents' meetings, training days, school ceremonies, etc.

Finally, don't forget to put socks on your feet, as your feet will become sweaty and sore by the day's end without socks!

THAI WORK PERMIT

THAI WORK PERMIT COST

The fees for a work permit in Thailand vary according to the duration of the work permit:

  1. 100 Baht/form = Application Fee

  2. 750 Baht = not longer than three months

  3. 1,500 Baht = longer than three months but does not exceed six months

  4. 3,000 Baht = longer than six months but does not exceed one year
