Thailand is a beautiful kingdom with a fascinating history and a unique culture; here are some interesting things about Thailand that you may not know!

  1. Thailand is over 500,000 square kilometers in size and is bordered by four countries Myanmar (Burma) to the North, Laos to the East, Cambodia to the South East, and Malaysia to the South.

  2. Thailand was officially called Siam until 1939; the name was changed to Thailand, only to switch back to Siam again in 1945. It was then changed back to Thailand on May 11, 1949. That means ‘free,’ which makes Thailand the land of the free.

  3. The nickname Land of Smiles is a consequence of Thais seeking harmony over social conflict. The smile is used to defuse aggression, avoid confrontation and promote happiness.

  4. The Thai language is a tonal language with five tones, and in the Thai alphabet, there are 44 consonants and 32 vowels.

  5. Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand, at 2,565 meters (8,415 feet). From December to January, the temperature can drop to as low as 1-2 degrees Celsius.

  6. Thailand is truly a land of temples, with around 35,000 temples scattered across the country. Some temples are breathtakingly beautiful.

  7. The national flower of Thailand is the orchid. Around 1,500 orchid species grow wild in the forests of Thailand. Orchids are considered some of the world’s most beautiful and strange flowers.

  8. Thailand is also famous for having many snakes. The enormous Python ever found in Thailand was around 33 feet long. Also, the world’s longest poisonous snake, the King Cobra, can be found in Thailand and is a highly impressive snake.

  9. Thailand has impressive beaches with over 1,500 miles of beaches and breathtaking islands. Thailand has over 1,000 islands, many of which have become famous because they were featured in Hollywood films, such as The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio and James Bond, the Man with the Golden Gun.
