Guidelines for applying for a Thai motorcycle license

Thai Motorcycle License Theory Test Information

Guest Writer-Simon De Gooijer an English teacher in Sukhothai Province, Thailand

I want to say that this was my experience going through the Thai Driving License Procedure, yours might be a bit different, but maybe the process will be the same.

90% of questions are covered in this study guide for the Thai drive exam: <<<https://chiangmaibuddy.com/thai-driving-license-exam-test-questions/>>>

Note: These tips are only for people who want to get a Thai motorcycle driver’s license. (Note each person’s experience will be different, these are my experiences in Sukhothai City, Sukhothai Province, Thailand)

Thai Motorcycle License Application Guidelines

  1. Go to your local motor vehicle department or department of land transport and make an appointment. You must bring a medical certificate (you can get this from a doctor or local hospital), your passport, your id card if you have one, and your work permit. (You can bring a resident certificate if a home address is not printed on the work permit.) Note: My work permit was accepted with my school address on it.)

  2. Also, bring at least two copies of everything; you can make copies at the location. (Also, check at the department with the examiner what you need to do for your driving test, how many days it is and what will happen on those days so that you are following the rules.)

  3. Getting your license takes about two-three days (My test was only two days). I can’t remember what I did each day but don’t worry if it is different; the whole process is relaxed depending on where you are. I am in a small town, so everything went easy.

Day 1: If I remember correctly, I had to do a vision/reaction test, watch a video about traffic rules in Thai with no English subtitles, and then do the practical Thai driving test around the course. After that, I went home. (Note: In my situation, the instructor didn’t even observe our driving, and there were a few people that messed up, but they were still OK.)

I used a bike I was renting then; if you don’t have one, I am sure you can rent one from the department or arrange one beforehand. I was never asked about an international license or another type of legal driving registration. You can practice thailand driving license test questions online, which are up-to-date and relevant, as mentioned above in the theory test information.

Day 2: On this day, I wrote the test. You must go to the testing area and wait until it is your turn. You might go all at once, get a number, or wait for your name to be called. Inside the testing area, you will be seated at a computer.

You can tell the tester you want it in English and select the correct answers. The test was similar to the practice test. Once you are finished, you can tell them you are finished and get your score. If your score is acceptable, you can get your license.

I got my physical license card after the test, but I am not sure how it will work where you are. Just follow their instructions. I had to pay 100B. After all that, I had my driver’s license.

Again, I want to say that this was my experience, yours might be a bit different, but maybe the process will be the same. Just don’t be afraid to ask questions.
