How to use a Bidet Shower (aka The Bum Gun)

Thailand and The Bidet Shower

If you come to South East Asia, one notable difference is the absence of toilet paper in the bathrooms. Instead, you will find a bidet shower, aka the bum gun.

A bidet shower (bidet sprayer, bum gun, or health faucet) is a hand-held triggered nozzle that is placed near the toilet and delivers a spray of water used for cleaning yourself after doing a number one (females) or a number two (everyone).

When you examine the bum gun’s spray of water against the use of toilet paper, it’s much more hygienic and does a more excellent job of cleaning you.

Water Pressure

Before you go ahead and begin to use it on a somewhat sensitive part of the body, you’ll want first to give it a test spray to determine whether it’s in working order and to check the pressure of the water.

The water pressure can vary from place to place; in some, it’s barely a trickle, and in others, it’s like a water jet cutter. All you need to do is pull the trigger, and you will see and feel the power of the water, then you will know how to proceed!

Bring your own Toilet Tissue

Using your bare hand with the spray is also common to clean yourself. It might seem unusual to people who are used to toilet paper their whole lives. However, Thai people claim it makes for a better cleansing experience.

If you’re not ready to use your hand to aid in cleaning, bring toilet paper, which is available in most shops. Outside of shopping malls and hotels, toilet paper is hardly ever provided. You will almost certainly find the bum gun instead!

Never Flush Always in the Bin

Also, you must put the toilet paper into the little bin in the corner of the toilet stall. A small bin is almost always placed next to the seat, ready for you to discard your tissue, and it’s because toilets in Southeast Asia can’t manage flushing toilet paper, so ensure that you correctly dispose of it.

Most of all, Don’t Forget to Wash Your Hands!
